New PhD

Canterbury Christ Church University is offering a new PhD in Arts and Health providing research training with a choice to focus on intervention research in one of the arts therapies or on arts-based practice related to health and wellbeing.

Anyone interested is advised to contact Dr Paul Camic to discuss research interests and to identify appropriate supervisors.

National Conference

Inspiring Transformations, a three day conference scheduled for this September is now seeking contributors. The conference will take place at The University of Northampton and will focus on the interactive relationships of Applied Arts and Health. Keynote and master class presenters include: Dr Alida Gersie (UK), Dr Philip Taylor (USA), Dr Frances Reynolds (UK), Prof Shaun McNiff (USA) and Carole Tarlington (Canada).

Therapies Conference

The 8th Exeter arts and therapies conference will take place on May 29th. Looking at the ways art therapy can be used in healthcare settings, the conference will include exhibitions and speakers from around the country.

National Co-ordination

LAHF is pleased to announce that over the next two years we will be working with a number of partners from around the country to develop a more co-ordinated approach to arts in health. This work will take on a number of aspects including lobbying policy-makers, mapping the arts and health sector nationally, liaising with regional bodies to share practice and co-ordinating a national conference which will take place towards the end of next year.

LAHF will be leading on much of this work which is being funded by Arts Council England and we are currently drawing together regional collaborators from around the country. LAHF will also be taking on additional staff to undertake some of this work as well as sharing tasks with regional partners.

Countering Climate Change

The Climate and Health Council is a newly established international organisation with the aim of mobilising health professionals across the world to take action to limit climate change. Any health professional and any health or health care organisation can become a member. The organisation’s website offers a range of interesting information about the role individuals working in the health and care sector can play in tackling climate change and the means to create healthier low carbon environments.

Poetry pulse taking

Poems in the Waiting Room is trying to collect together examples of the use and place of poetry in a health/social care context. The scope should be wide spread and stretch well beyond the direct usage of poetry as therapy.

Estates and Facilities Conference

Sunand Prasad, President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), will deliver a keynote address on healthcare architecture at the Health Estates & Facilities Management Association’s Annual Conference which will be taking place at the Park Inn Heathrow in May under the headline theme ‘The future of healthcare delivery: an international EFM perspective’.

The conference will focus on the design and management of healthcare facilities and will also showcase the impact art can have in improving the healing environment. For further information, w: www.hefma.org.uk.

Painting for all

The Society for All Artists has launched "Guidelines to Art" a kit to be used by any small group wishing to take up painting. The Society is keen to make the kit available to care homes, day care centres and hospices. e: John@saa.co.uk

The conference, which will take place on March 12th in central London promises to look at the impact of art on the patient environment and analyse the state of the sector two years on from the Department of Health’s Report of the Review of the Arts in Health Working Group.

A range of speakers are confirmed including Dr Sam Everington from Bromley by Bow, Dr Jenny Secker and Lord Alan Howarth who initiated the recent debate about arts in health in the House of Lords. The event should prove a good opportunity to catch up with developments from across the country.
